AAA Teaches Driver's Ed Class
Rich Bradley
AAA-South Jersey driver Matt Pullinger found himself back at high school. This time, however, he wasn’t a student – he was the teacher.
On Oct. 14, Pullinger was the guest instructor as part of Eastern High School’s Driver Education Curriculum. Classes were held in the parking lot at the high school, Pullinger showed students a number of basic vehicle safety tips and techniques, demonstrated the proper way to change a tire, check various vehicle fluid levels, and what to do in the event of an accident. A total of more than 500, 10th-grade students attended the classes throughout the school day.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Pullinger, who has been teaching the class for two years now. “We try to teach the students basic car safety, like changing a tire, how to check fluids and what to do if they’re involved in an accident. They usually ask a lot of good questions about what I’m showing them with the car and about their own cars.”
For AAA-South Jersey, the class is a way for the club to be involved in the community and also allows students a first-hand look at some of the many services AAA offers to student-drivers and their families.
“Matt’s really good with the kids at these classes and the school keeps inviting him back,” said Ken Chin, AAASouth Jersey’s Vice-President of Member Services. “The class gives the students an opportunity to put a face with AAA and makes them aware of what it takes to be a good, safe driver. We’re really fortunate to have such a good relationship with the school and we hope it continues for years to come.”
Pullinger, who has been with AAASouth Jersey for five years, has conducted similar classes at other local high schools and colleges. He has recently conducted a traffic safety class for an area elementary school. He also has been asked to come back to Eastern to participate in an Auto Parts program.
“I’m a third generation mechanic, so I really enjoy doing it,” Pullinger said of the classes. “I love working with cars and sharing my knowledge with the students.”
