Collection Effort Yields Big Results

AAA South Jersey Members Donate Over 200 Pounds Of Travel-size Personal Hygiene Items to Local Shelters

In the November/December 2011 issue of SJ First, there was a small article asking members to donate any unused, complimentary hotel toiletries from recent travels. Even though the magazine article was small, the response from the AAA South Jersey community was huge! As of early December, AAA members have donated more than 200 pounds of personal-sized toiletries.

The donated items, including soap, shampoo, skin lotion, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, shaving supplies and hand sanitizers, were given to Volunteers of America for use at local shelters on Nov. 21 Collected items were distributed to VOA Delaware Valley’s Housing and Supportive Services Division’s three family emergency shelters: Agape House in Somerville; Anna Sample Complex in Camden; and the Eleanor Corbett House in Glassboro. Two VOA men’s shelters – Amani House In Trenton and the Aletha R. Wright “Vision of Hope” Center in Camden – will also receive collected items.

“We are so grateful for the help provided to us by AAA South Jersey and its members,” said Rebecca Fuller, Director of Communications for Volunteers of America Delaware Valley. “For most people, things like soap and toothpaste are hardly thought of at all. But for the people who are coming into our shelters, they are a luxury and desperately needed.”

Donations are still being accepted at AAA South Jersey offices in Voorhees, Sewell, Millville and Logan Township, as well as Royal Travel Agency in Vineland. The effort will continue in the new year.

“The response we received to this collection effort surpassed our expectations,”said Rich Bradley, AAA South Jersey’s Public Affairs Specialist.

“From the first day the article appeared In our magazine, people were coming to our offices with donations.

We originally intended to bring the collected items to VOA closer to Christmas, but the volume of items that we received over the past three weeks was so overwhelming we were forced to move up the date for our first contribution to before Thanksgiving.”

The focus of VOA’s Housing and Supportive Services program is the development of independence and self-sufficiency. The goal is to address the specific needs of each individual to help them overcome the factors that led to homelessness.
